Priming and Painting
Paint is a general term for any liquid or viscous substance applied in a relatively thin layer to produce an opaque coating. Paints are composed of three essential parts: pigment, binder, and solvent.
A pigment is the material that produces the visual colour in paint. The colour is produced by means of selective colour absorption. Pigments also influence other properties of the paint such as gloss, film flow and protective characteristics.
The binder, or resin, is the part of the paint that actually forms the body, or solid film, of the coating. It also provides the adhesion quality of the paint. The binder binds the pigments together as well. The type of binder used also influences such properties as gloss potential, exterior durability, flexibility, and toughness.
The solvent, which is also referred to as the vehicle, is present to adjust the viscosity of the paint. It can control flow and application properties of the paint, but it does not become part of the paint film. The solvent is the volatile part of the paint, which means it changes into a vapour during the drying process of the paint.
Industrial coatings are more concerned with the protective properties of paint than the aesthetic properties, although aesthetics can often be a concern also. Corrosion protection is probably the most common consideration. The most common polymers used in industrial painting are epoxy and polyurethane.
Primer is a preparatory paint that is applied to the material prior to the paint to ensure better adhesion. Using a primer before painting usually increases the durability of the coating and provides additional protection to the material being painted. Primers are specialty coatings that can vary depending upon the type of material being painted.
